  1. You can get started right away. Walking involves joining no gym or class. You don’t need to learn how to do it or find someone to spot you. You can get involved right away, simply by walking out your front door and seeing where your feet take you.
  2. You can go where you like. You are no longer stuck to the gym or your front room, you can take yourself outside and walk where you like, from stunning mountain scenery to wandering around town – it’s up to you.
  3. It is easier on the joints. Running, weight lifting and the like have their place, but they can be painful on your joints – and do some real damage. A brisk walk will do your knees much less harm than a short run.
  4. It’s free. There are no joining fees or usage costs… you don’t need much by way or equipment, just some shoes!
  5. Walking is easy to fit into your schedule. We all know how hard it is to fit a work out into our schedule – the idea of going to the gym before or after work is about as appealing as having your finger nails pulled out at times. But by walking to and from work, or walking down to the shops, we are fitting good exercise into our daily routine, for stuff we had to do anyway.
  6. It is a very good work out. Some people forget this, but a brisk walk can burn a lot of calories – really help tone your muscles and lose weight from your waist and belly.
  7. It can be tailored to you. It is easy to create a walk that challenges you at the rate you want to be challenged at. From a stroll along the promenade to hiking up a mountain – the intensity of it is entirely up to you.
